Astronomers have uncovered a rare giant planet, TOI-199b, that exhibits surprisingly mild temperatures, challenging long-held assumptions about planetary habitability. This discovery, made using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, suggests that temperate giant planets may exist in regions of the solar system where Earth’s conditions could support life. The planet, which orbits a star over 330 light-years away, completes an orbit every 100 days, making it distinct from the extreme cold of Jupiter and Saturn. Unlike their icy counterparts, TOI-199b’s surface temperature averages around 175°F, offering a window into the potential for liquid water and complex atmospheres—key factors in determining habitability. This finding adds to growing interest in temperate gas giants, as scientists aim to better understand how such worlds form and evolve. By studying TOI-199b, researchers hope to refine models of planetary atmospheres and improve our understanding of Earth’s own atmosphere.
