Loro Piana's 2026 Knit Design Award: A Celebration of Young Talent and Innovation
Loro Piana, the Italian luxury brand owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, has once again showcased its commitment to nurturing young talent and pushing the boundaries of knitting. The 10th edition of the Loro Piana Knit Design Award, held at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan, celebrated the art of knitting and its potential to inspire and innovate.
The award, which challenges students from leading design schools worldwide to infuse innovation into the brand's signature yarns, has become a cornerstone of Loro Piana's commitment to the craft. Since its inception, the contest has engaged over 90 students from 15 nationalities, donated 1,000 kilograms of yarns, and collaborated with 21 schools across eight countries.
This year's theme, 'Knitting Light - Craft on the Evolution of Colour', challenged students to experiment with one mélange and up to three mouliné cashmere yarns. The task was to create a convertible garment or silhouette that represented transformation and evolution, utilizing technology's transformative power to enhance shades.
The winning project, 'Glitsky - Mother of Pearl', was created by Viola Schmidt and Halla Lilja Ármannsdóttir from the Swedish School of Textiles, tutored by Professor Lara Alvarez. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of sunlight hitting crystallized clouds and refracting a full palette of colors, the students employed Loro Piana's cashmere and specialty yarns to create a modular, transformable midi dress.
The structured top layer was backed by a softer under layer, each characterized by a patchwork of diamond-shaped patterns. The patterns could be rearranged and detached through an integrated linking system, demonstrating an extraordinary fusion of artistic vision and technical mastery.
The winners will receive a scholarship from Loro Piana consisting of 10,000 euros per student, a contract to work for the company, and the opportunity to develop their samples into viable garments with the help of the house's knitwear team. The final products will be showcased at the upcoming edition of the textile trade show Pitti Filati in Florence.
A special mention award was bestowed on the project presented by Li-Yue Chen and Tzu-Wei Yang from Shih Chien University in Taipei. The jury, which included Loro Piana executives and industry experts, praised the creativity and innovation displayed by all the participants.
